7-14 September: BIS students are on the ball
We all know about the CommonwealthBank Tennis Classic that just took place at the Grand Hyatt, Nusa Dua. Some of us were even fortunate enough to go watch a few matches. Even better, some of our kids got to experience a coaching session with one of the legendary Woodies – Australian tennis hero, Todd Woodbridge! But did you know that some of those energetic ballboys and girls, who managed to keep on the ball no matter what the temperature on court (both weather temperature and players’ temperatures!), hailed from Bali International School? Congratulations to these guys, and girl, who did BIS proud: Manoa Brown, Ailee Forest and Gary Bencheghib. To get the inside scoop on what really went down on court click here for our in-depth interview with BIS ballboy, Manoa.
Monday 8 September: Designs on life
Taman Bacaan Community Library played host to future kite designers of the world
The Taman Bacaan Kite Design competition, held on World Literacy Day, 8 September 2008 was, without doubt, a riot… of colour, kids and happy faces.
One would think that in a roomful of more than 50 kids, locked in competition to see who could draw the most eye-catching kite, that there’d be tears and tantrums. Not at Taman Bacaan on theBIS campus, where sore losers were non-existent and no gloating winners could be found. Just a bunch of smiling children, all completely absorbed, and completely happy, in the task of drawing, colouring and even helping each other!
The idea was to create a design for a kite. Some got it. Some didn’t. What everyone did get was that this was an awesome opportunity to let loose on the crayon box and fill the day with as many bright colours as possible.
Bright, happy colours. Brothers helping sisters. Older kids helping younger kids. Plenty of sharing the love, with tons of heart designs to prove it. This was the order of the day at the Taman Bacaan Kite Design Contest. There were, however, some winners announced at the end of it all:
Senior (Grade 4-6)
1st: Made Dika Diatmika
2nd: Gede Darmawan
3rd: Juharta
Best Effort: I Putu Yoga
Junior (Kindy–Grade 3)
1st: Tarisa
2nd: Putu Andika Putra
3rd: Diah
Best Effort: Kadek Agus Jaya
But the real winners? The skies… newly adorned with some gorgeous kite designs created in Taman Bacaan.
