Bali Island School Presents: Maia’s Magic Shout Surf Contest to Support Yayasan Senyum Bali

Mom, Yayasan Senyum Bali, and Maia

As part of the Diploma Programme CAS project, Maia, Bali Island School’s Grade 11 student brought the Magic Shootout Surf Contest in support of Yayasan Senyum Bali. The contest was a powerful force for good that successfully raised significant funds to provide healthcare and support for children and adults living with craniofacial disabilities. Let’s read her story here!

      1. How did you first learn about Yayasan Senyum Bali, and what drew you to support them?

I discovered Yayasan Senyum Bali through friends and their stores in Sanur. Their commitment to helping those who can’t afford healthcare, especially those with craniofacial abnormalities, deeply resonated with me. Seeing the need for more awareness in Bali, I felt compelled to take action and support their cause.

     2. How do you see surfing as a tool to create a meaningful cause?

Bali’s strong surfing community provides a unique perspective on the environment, making it a powerful platform for raising awareness and rallying local support. For me, surfing is more than just a hobby, it’s a connection to nature and a personal challenge.

Driven by this passion, I wanted to create an event with a purpose. By combining surfing with a meaningful cause, I found a way to give back, support communities, and help local organizations. This event not only strengthens our impact but also inspires others to make a difference while having fun.

     3. What advice would you give to others looking to merge their hobbies with a meaningful cause?

My advice would be to start by identifying the values and causes that resonate the most with you. When you’re passionate about something, it’s easier to integrate your passion into a cause that you care about. Find the people around you to help support and who you would like to help raise awareness for. The key is to stick to your dedication, bring your ideas to light, and adapt your approach to make a real impact.
