The Bali Island School Academic Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a high level of achievement in all classes.
In order to maintain the scholarship for the two-year period, the school expects that the student will:
- consistently earn high achievement levels in all classes. Any course final grade for the semester below a 5 will warrant a conversation between the Scholarship Awardee, the Head of School, and the Parent/Guardian.
- attain an average of 6 or above for all course final semester grades.
- demonstrate exemplary approaches to learning
- model the attributes of the IB Learner Profile
- actively look to attain leadership opportunities and be a role model for their peers, both within and outside of the classroom
- be an engaged community member committed to serving others.

In order to maintain the scholarship for the two-year period, the school expects that the student will:
- continue to develop their talent/s and share their passion with and beyond the BIS community. This may be in assemblies, classes, and community events and programs.
- consistently earn grades of above 5 in all classes. Any course final grade for the semester of 4 or below will warrant a conversation between the Scholarship Awardee, the Head of School, and the Parent/Guardian.
- attain an average of 5 or above for all course final semester grades.
- demonstrate exemplary approaches to learning
- model the attributes of the IB Learner Profile
- actively look to attain leadership opportunities and be a role model for their peers, both within and outside of the classroom
- be an engaged community member committed to serving others.

A. Tri Hita Karana and How It is Related to the IB Framework at BIS
Tri Hita Karana is a traditional Balinese philosophy centered on achieving harmony and balance in life through three key relationships:
- Harmony with God (Parahyangan),
- Harmony among people (Pawongan), and
- Harmony with nature (Palemahan).
This concept aligns well with the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework at Bali Island School (BIS), which provides holistic education and the development of well-rounded, globally aware individuals
Tri Hita Karana reflects on the importance of balancing personal achievements with social responsibility and environmental stewardship, all of which reflect the IB’s mission to create a better, more peaceful world.
B. About BIS Tri Hita Karana scholarship
- The BIS Tri Hita Karana (THK) Scholarship is fully sponsored by Yayasan Bali International School, covering 100% of school costs from entry through graduation (Grade 12).
- The BIS Tri Hita Karana Scholarship offers a world-class education to an external INDONESIAN student (one student) with exceptional achievements and potential in both academics and non-academics.
- Eligible for a student aiming for Grades 9 and/or Grade 10 and currently enrolled in national schools in Denpasar and the close surrounding area.
C. Eligibility
- The BIS THK scholarship will only be available for 1 deserving student and will be open every 2-3 years
- Indonesian citizens applying for the scholarship must meet the expectations of the BIS admissions requirements and the additional requirements set by the Scholarship Committee.
- The decisions made by the Scholarship Committee are final and not subject to change
- Awardees will be assessed on their progress report every 2 terms (1 semester) by the academic team. The evaluation of this report will determine eligibility for continued scholarship support.
- Failure to provide a satisfactory report may result in scholarship cancellation for the following year
D. Application Timeline
The application for the Tri Hita Karana Scholarship is opened from 1 February-30 March 2025, with details as follows:
- 1 February – 30 March 2025: Submission of applications.
Applicants submit all required documents, including completed forms, academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and personal statements.
Deadline for submission: 15 February 2025.
- 1 April-15 April 2025: Application review by the Yayasan and Scholarship Committee
- 16 April-31 April 2025: Interviews with shortlisted candidates.
- 31 April-20 May 2025: Final evaluation and selection
- 30 May 2025 : Scholarship recipients notified.
Selected recipients confirm acceptance of the Tri Hita Karana Scholarship.

E. Application requirements:
- Be an Indonesian citizen
- Applicants should provide:
- Official academic transcript from the last 3 years and teacher’s recommendation from their previous school
- This transcript must reflect consistently high grades, esp. For subjects as follows:
- Mathematics (with minimum score of 85)
- English (with minimum score of 85)
- Science (with minimum score of 85)
- Social Studies (with minimum score of 85)
- Arts (with minimum score of 85)
- PE (with minimum score of 85)
- Qualifying students will be asked to:
- Write a 500-word essay on a topic to be assigned at BIS. This essay should be completed in “real-time” on campus at BIS.
- Submit teacher recommendations (preferably in English) from their current Math and English instructor
- Documentation evidencing achievements during the past three years
- Take the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) test at the BIS minimum level, 90th percentile.
- Take part in an interview with the IB Coordinator(s), Deputy Head of School, Head of School, SPK Principal and a School Board Member
- Family to also be interviewed
F. Furthermore, the selected candidate must:
- Show a long-term commitment to learning by providing BIS with:
- A written agreement of their academic plan and reflection each term
- Documentation of participation in organizations/workshops/etc
- Evidence of CCA involvement
- Adhere to BIS behavior expectations, attendance, and actively participate in the school community by providing us with written personal statements about:
- The passion for learning,
- Future career plans
- Any other matter that supports their education and learning development over time
- Declare need for financial aid – annual family income tax should be less than IDR 230 million (based on official tax filing required, or official payslip issued by employer)
